Access control barriers are passive control mechanisms for delaying an intruder until other protective action can be taken. To alert and apply security reinforcements, it is necessary to implement an active security subsystem for detecting and diagnosing intrusion attempts in progress. This paper discusses the information requirements of the active security subsystem, as well as those for two other security functions--auditing and threat monitoring--and explores ways of instrumenting a databank system for obtaining this information. 9 pp. Ref.
