Presents the simple Bayesian analytic approach to medical decisionmaking. In this approach, doctors are assumed to minimize the average costs (in health or money) of their actions. A model of the diagnostic process is given which allows tests and treatments to be evaluated. The methods are demonstrated by an analysis of the decision whether to operate on suspected appendicitis. 15 pp.
