Adjustment and verification of the randdelta II model

The Randdelta II model, a large numerical representation of part of the Netherlands coast and the estuaries of the Scheldt, supports studies related to construction of a large storm surge barrier across the entrance of the Eastern Scheldt. It is a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model, coupled to a water-quality model, and is driven by water levels around the open boundary of the North Sea and discharges in the river Scheldt at the Netherlands-Belgium border. To adjust the model, initially simple linear analytical models of the coastal sea and the estuaries were made. Experiments with these models gave insight into the choice of the most effective boundary conditions and the sensitivity of depth and bottom resistance changes. To reduce the computational effort, submodels of the Randdelta model were adjusted first. After making initial estimates of the Manning's coefficients, simulation results were compared with prototype data, and then Manning's coefficients and depth were changed until a good agreement was found.
