A tidal survey for a model of an offshore area

Reports on the extensive survey of tides and currents made to verify the Randdelta II model, as part of a study being made prior to construction of a storm surge barrier in the southwestern part of the Netherlands. The survey incorporated data from several permanent water level recording stations, gauges in harbors and estuaries, and offshore instrument platforms and towers. Special emphasis was given to analysis of pressure data obtained from two recorders at the boundary of the model area. Recorded data were corrected for atmospheric pressure differences, temperatures, and salinity, and were then converted to a form suitable for input to the model. The extensive method of preparing the boundary conditions of this model has produced work that should have wide application: the response functions appear to have high coherency in the frequency ranges of the major tide components, with the exception of storm periods, which were not analyzed.
