Development of Parametric Cost Models for Weapon Systems

Statistical cost models are widely used in the Department of Defense for estimating the cost of next-generation weapon systems. This paper presents a brief survey of the evolution of such models from the post-World War II period to the present time. The emphasis is on aircraft cost models of the type that require only physical and performance parameters as inputs. The utility of such models has been demonstrated, and they are now being used in a variety of other fields.
