Paper based on a talk given at the Litton Software Technology Management Conference held in Houston, Texas, September 21-23, 1981. The author talks about the new economics of the computer industry brought on by the VLSI revolution and the means for coping with some of these changes. Multiprocessor emulation architectures allowing reuse of existing software are illustrated by means of a simple design. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of recent advances in the physics of computation and their implications for the future of computing.
