This paper was originally presented in September 1986 at the Prague, Czechoslovakia, international symposium on Figure and Dynamics of the Earth, Moon, and Planets, and it will be published in a book containing papers from the meeting. The symposium was sponsored by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), the Committee for Space Research (COSPAR), and the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The IAU/IAG/COSPAR Working Group on Cartographic Coordinates and Rotational Elements of the Planets and Satellites, which was established in 1976, publishes a report every three years. This paper discusses the adopted definitions, conventions, and content of the 1985 report, and includes a brief note about those who use the data.
This report is part of the RAND Corporation Paper series. The paper was a product of the RAND Corporation from 1948 to 2003 that captured speeches, memorials, and derivative research, usually prepared on authors' own time and meant to be the scholarly or scientific contribution of individual authors to their professional fields. Papers were less formal than reports and did not require rigorous peer review.
