Fire Company Relocation and the Future of Applied Operations Research

This paper is the text of an invited talk presented at the 25th Joint National Meeting of The Institute of Management Sciences and the Operations Research Society of America. The history of a fire company relocation model is used to motivate a possible course of development for the applied side of the operations research profession. The paper suggests that linking operations research analysts with decision support system builders will improve the quality of decision support systems and reenergize the operations research profession.
