This paper describes the author's visit to Ethiopia in November and December 1990. He describes the positive effects of the limited economic reforms initiated by President Mengistu in March 1990 and reports on visits to southwestern and northern Shoa, Arsi, Gojjam, and Gondar. He discusses the effect of the wars in the northern part of the country, the threat of famine and the macroeconomic crisis; describes the mood in the capital city; and reviews Ethiopia's foreign relations. Finally, he reports on a four-hour, very frank exchange of views with now-deposed President Mengistu Haile Mariam.
