Blast-Induced Ground Motions

The Surface Wave and Horizontal Displacements

Investigates two types of ground motions, resulting from blasts, whose fundamental physics are often lost in computer simulations. One is the direct-induced surface wave, and the other is air-blast-induced horizontal displacements. The study used exact formulas for motions in an elastic model of the earth medium. It was found that the particles of the surface wave can move either forward or backward, depending on the initial loading conditions of the blast. Under a superseismic blast, horizontal displacements were found to be either in or out, depending on the Poisson's ratio of the medium and the velocity of the blast wave.
