This report reviews and critically assesses more than 500 books, articles, dissertations, FCC filings, and testimony before Congress dealing with ownership and control of radio, television, cable communications, and newspapers. Two principal questions are considered: (1) What is the extent of ownership concentration in the mass media? (2) In what ways does media ownership influence media performance? Also considered are government policies that have evolved to deal with concentration, problems of measuring broadcast station performance, and the need for additional data and analysis to strengthen the basis for future policymaking. A description of the current status and trends in media ownership focuses on corporate ownership of multiple media outlets and media crossownership within a single community. 218 pp. Bibliog.
