ResearchPublished 1978
Analyzes the problems and prospects for the commercialization of high-Btu coal gasification. It examines the costs of the synthetic natural gas (SNG) production, the costs of alternatives, and the sensitivity of cost estimates to changes in input parameters. It describes the institutional constraints to SNG from coal commercialization, including gas industry characteristics and current regulatory philosophy. It concludes that under current circumstances the private sector will not commercialize high-Btu coal gasification without government support, and it identifies regulatory policy as a key element in any solution.
