A study of the turbulent boundary-layer drag for production-type or nonideal aircraft surfaces. This research memorandum discusses (1) both the internal mechanism of the incompressible turbulent-boundary layer and basic empirical results, as affected by surface roughness, and (2) the effects of the compressibility in the turbulent boundary layer up to the point where the roughness elements themselves become locally affected and are no longer immersed in an incompressible field.
