An evaluation of the available literature on thermal accommodation coefficients describing the mechanism of heat transfer to a body immersed in a rarefied gas. For various reasons, previous experimental investigations have failed to produce satisfactory measurements of these coefficients, notably in the low-density flow regime where the mean free path of molecular travel becomes comparable to or greater than the physical dimensions of the body. Possible ways of correcting these defects are advanced, and the need for new measurements is discussed.
