The use of certain auxiliary equations to derive the diffusion matrix of radiative transfer, consisting of reflectance (scattering) and transmittance operators in a stratified atmosphere. Work on radiative transfer is important in solving problems arising in the propagation of radiation through planetary atmospheres. For example, improved theoretical knowledge of radiative transfer is required for proper interpretation of the readings of light intensity made from a satellite passing close to a planet
