Is the Martian Blue Haze Produced by Solar Protons?.

An attempt to determine whether the Martian blue haze is produced by solar protons. The author examines the hypothesis that the haze is due to molecular ions caused by solar protons and that clearing occurs when the relative positions of the earth and Mars are such that the magnetic field of the earth shields Mars from the solar proton stream. As this theory does not appear to offer a satisfactory explanation of all the observed facts, several observations are suggested that could be made from a fly-by vehicle to provide a final test of the solar proton hypothesis
