A derivation of a mathematical model that describes the minimum-weight design of a horizontal beam under an invariable, concentrated, vertical load moving slowly from one end to the other. Beams of this type, although seemingly impractical in earthbound structures, may have potential applications in a weightless environment such as that of a space station.
