An investigation of the disturbance produced in the atmosphere by a high-speed body moving upward. The effects of the atmospheric density stratification on the propagation of pressure waves are examined at large distances from the body. The results predict a sudden, and surprisingly large, upward and outward displacement of the air, followed by an oscillatory decay of the displacement
