A translation of a Russian article appearing in Akademiia Nauk SSSR. Otdelenie Teknicheskikh Nauk. Izvestia: Mekhanika i Mashinostroenie, Issue 5, 1960. The study analyzes meteoric ablation resulting in expressions for the variation of mass and velocity during entry into the atmosphere. The results allow the use of meteor data to deduce the properties of the upper atmosphere.
