The Astronomical Unit of Distance

Solar Parallax and Related Constants

Gerard Henride Vaucouleurs

ResearchPublished 1961

A presentation of the astronomical unit and a consistent set of related solar-system constants. The author reviews past determinations of the astronomical unit and the solar parallax by optical and dynamical methods, and derives a current "best estimate." The recent radar determinations, which appear to yield a different result, are discussed.
