Cumulative Probability of Detection for Targets Approaching a Uniformly Scanning Search Radar

J. D. Mallett, L. E. Brennan

ResearchPublished 1962

A discussion of the capability of search radars for detecting approaching targets. This Memorandum shows that the range of a uniformly scanning search radar, for a given cumulative detection probability, varies as the cube root of the average transmitted power. The more familiar fourth root relationship applies in the case of fixed single-scan detection probability. Curves are given, in a conveniently normalized form, for obtaining the optimum search rate and radar range as a function cumulative detection probability.
