A discussion of the role of the theory of radiative transfer in obtaining quantitative predictions of the scattering and diffusion of radiant energy as it passes through a medium. The approach investigated attempts to reduce the computational effort involved in solving certain problems for which the equations used do not specify a unique solution. The results should be useful to scientists working on radiative-transfer problems, particularly in the area of numerical computation
