A discussion of stabilizing the laminar boundary layer by means of a distributed-damping coating applied to aircraft and hydrocraft. The skin-friction-drag advantages accruing from the elimination, or reduction, of the turbulent boundary layer are well known. On the basis of recent detailed boundary-layer measurements by others, and the limited success of this low-frequency stabilizing coating, the author advances the concept of high-frequency instability of the laminar boundary layer. On the basis of inferred wave lengths and frequencies confirmed by subsequent measurements, the design of stabilizing coatings is examined.
