Uses of Monte Carlo in PERT

Richard Van Slyke

ResearchPublished 1963

The application of Monte Carlo, or random-variable, techniques to the PERT management system. Some of the weaknesses of the present system are outlined, and it is suggested that the use of Monte Carlo methods can lead to improvement by allowing less restrictive mathematical assumptions to be made and by extending the kinds of computational results to be obtained. An experimental computer program for Monte Carlo treatment of PERT networks is described, and shortcuts for reducing the time for computation are discussed.
