A treatment of the problem of designing a horizontal I-beam of variable flange thickness and constant web height. The beam is built in at both ends and is otherwise unsupported, but is subjected to a concentrated vertical unit load that moves slowly from one end to the other. A linear program in function space is obtained, using the concepts of limit analysis (based on the signum-type stress-strain diagram); and the solution of the program is given, yielding the minimum weight design as well as the critical reactions at the ends of the beam.
