Magnetohydrodynamic re-entry control.

Myron C. Smith

ResearchPublished 1965

A discussion of the feasibility of controlling a hypersonic reentry vehicle by means of the interaction of a magnetic field, carried on board the vehicle, with the shock-induced ionized gas. From the solution of the equations governing hypersonic flow about a magnetized body, an estimate is made of the magnetic field required for a magnetized body, an estimate is made of the magnetic field required for a magnetic control force equal to the aerodynamic force. An estimate is also made of the weight of the superconducting coil and associated. equipment required to produce the field.
