Some reflections on a survey of research problems in computer software

A review of the role of software in computer usage and suggestions concerning appropriate directions and emphases for software research. Primary focus is on the development of computer languages and representations, the efficiency of the programming and translation processes, and the environment in which programmers and programs interact. The key problem of making computers accessible to the nonprofessional user is also discussed.
