An analysis of the effect of changeable background noise on the detectability of a broadband sonar signal. It has been shown previously that uncertainty concerning the background noise level can have an important effect on detectability. Here, means for measuring the noise level are assumed to be incorporated in the detector, and it is found that the assumption of stationary noise results in the same optimistic estimate of detectability as that obtained under the assumption of known noise level. The effect of nonstationary noise is then considered, and it is shown how the detectability depends on the correlation time and magnitude of the noise-level fluctuation, as well as on the signal level, the target velocity, and the distance of the target's closest approach to the detector. 80 pp.
