An analysis of the temperature distribution and surface recession rate of a subliming material subject to an applied steady, periodic heat flux. A simple analytic solution indicates that there may be either a phase lead or a phase lag between the surface recession rate and the applied heat flux. The magnitude and sign of this phase shift are related to the temperature dependence of the vapor-pressure curve, as well as to the relative amounts of energy that contribute to vaporization and internal energy. 15 pp. Ref.
