A survey of the literature for an answer to the question: How long and under what conditions can POL be stored at a given level of quality? Information about the type of storage and handling facilities that will allow a particular quality of fuel to be stored for a desired length of time will enable military planners to draw up accurate estimates of the prepositioning costs involved in a rapid deployment scheme. The literature shows that uncontaminated gasoline, and probably aviation and diesel fuels as well, can be stored for at least 5 years without serous deterioration if they are stored in sealed tanks. The literature does not provide a specific time limit for the storage of thermally stable fuel, nor does it provide data linking the severity of degradation of the fuel to the severity of decline in engine performance. Without such information it is impossible to determine the least expensive combination of fuel quality and repair cost. 45 pp. Bibliog. (MW)
