The Flow of Defendants through the New York City Criminal Court in 1967

A detailed quantitative description of the flow of defendants through the Criminal Court of the City of New York. Presented diagrammatically as flow charts, the description of cases is restricted to arraignments and final dispositions of nontraffic cases processed in 1967. Numbers of defendants at each stage are shown, as well as the method by which each estimate was derived. Refinements and extensions of the research are suggested that would provide a more complete picture of court operations for use in allocating court resources, identifying bottlenecks and operational problems, and examining the interactions between the court and other agencies. Difficulties encountered underscore the need for an overhaul of the entire information system: statistics reported by various agencies are incompatible, statistics in reports aggregate physically distinct operations, procedures are not uniform, and statistical report preparation means long delays.
