This working paper has been prepared for Project Retrosight which is investigating the payback on CVD research in three countries (Australia, Britain, Canada). This document provides an overview of the key background issues involved in this study of research into CVD. These are: an introduction to CVD, including the different forms of the disease, risk factors and the impact on both people and countries; an introduction to CVD research, covering the different areas of CVD research,the key advances, high-impact research and future expectations for research.
