Comparing For-Profit and Not-for-Profit Health Care Providers

A Review of the Literature

This report summarizes a literature review examining the relationship between ownership status and facility costs in hospitals, nursing homes, and dialysis centers as well as four post-acute care settings: skilled nursing facilities, long-term care hospitals, institutional rehabilitation facilities, and home health agencies. The report provides background on the issues related to profit status and provider costs and summarizes and discusses the implications of the findings in the literature for future work on the relationship between profit status and provider costs, particularly in the post-acute care setting.
