As the debate about whether and when China might attack Taiwan intensifies—and as Chinese provocations in the region and now elsewhere abound—it will be increasingly important to understand how PRC leadership assesses the military balance between the United States and China. What do PRC leaders see as the PLA’s military strength? And how might these self-assessments alter China’s views of risk in regard to potential great power conflict, namely over the status of Taiwan?

In conversation with Lisa Saum-Manning, Acting Associate Director of RAND's International Security and Defense Policy Center, Mark will discuss findings and recommendations from this new analysis, one of the first to detail and explore the critical issue of how the People's Liberation Army understands and assesses military balance.
