These proceedings summarize the results of a conference held in Lisbon in April 1995 dealing with the themes of employment, economic development, and migration in Southern Europe and the Maghreb. Papers presented at the conference analyze the overall employment and unemployment situation in the region, and its role in contributing to migration across the Mediterranean. Other papers discuss different approaches to economic development in the region, and draw lessons from North American experience relevant to the Mediterranean.
