Nearly all the issues that have led the Air Force to adopt the Expeditionary Aerospace Force concept are present in intermediate maintenance operations for Low Altitude Navigation Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) pods. LANTIRN support easily lends itself to new support structures such as consolidation that may improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the combat support system. Time is the critical variable to consider in designing LANTIRN support structures. In a decentralized support structure, the challenge is deploying and setting up equipment within four days from the beginning of combat operations, lest pod availability for engaged aircraft decrease. In a centralized support structure, one-way transportation time cannot exceed four days. Other support tradeoffs involve strategic and operational risks, deployment footprint, and organizational issues.
