An attempt to determine the prospects of expanding trade between the territories of East Africa and other countries in the Eastern part of the continent by examining their existing patterns of trade. The volume and composition of the trade that develops in the future will be conditioned largely (1) by the course that economic development takes, both in the East African and neighboring countries, and (2) by the extent to which these two groups of countries develop a complementary economic structure. The specific countries considered are Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Congo (Leopoldville), Ethiopia, The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, Mauritius, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, and Sudan.
This report is part of the RAND Corporation Paper series. The paper was a product of the RAND Corporation from 1948 to 2003 that captured speeches, memorials, and derivative research, usually prepared on authors' own time and meant to be the scholarly or scientific contribution of individual authors to their professional fields.
