A study of the three major problem areas in preventing fatigue failures: (1) prediction of the fluctuating stresses that cause fatigue; (2) behavior of the structural material undergoing these stresses; and (3) scatter in stresses encountered in service and in fatigue behavior. The data most important for design, and some techniques for using these data, are presented and discussed. The designer's role in selecting the fatigue problems that should be studied is emphasized.
