On Concave Bodies in Free Molecule Flow

Richard Schamberg

Expert InsightsPublished 1967

A summary of earlier work by Chahine, Pratt, Sparrow, and others on free molecule flow over nonconvex surfaces, and the presentation of their numerical results in an alternative form. This new form is more conducive to a physical understanding of the flow and to generalization to other geometries or surface interactions not yet analyzed in detail. Data on drag of concave surfaces are given. Free molecule flow over concave bodies has possible use in parachute-like drogue devices, high-altitude air collectors, propulsion induction systems, and pressure probes.

This publication is part of the RAND paper series. The paper series was a product of RAND from 1948 to 2003 that captured speeches, memorials, and derivative research, usually prepared on authors' own time and meant to be the scholarly or scientific contribution of individual authors to their professional fields. Papers were less formal than reports and did not require rigorous peer review.
