Highlights from a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency sponsored gaming evaluation project. Discussed is a detailed survey instrument used to characterize 132 operational models, simulations, and games (MSGs) in the active Department of Defense inventory as of the end of 1971. Major findings related to the purpose, production, operations, use, and costs of the sample are presented. Opinions of those responsible for these MSGs are noted as are the general observations of the researchers.
