The world that has shaped nuclear deterrence over the past 45 years is rapidly changing. To speculate on the future of nuclear deterrence, this paper reviews the history of the concept of nuclear deterrence and the society from which that concept sprang. It then discusses military utility and counterforce, the nature of nuclear deterrence today, and implications the information era may have for deterrence.
