A discussion of the use of dynamic programming in a terminal guidance process for satellite intercept and rendezvous problems. The mathematical equations describing the process are simplified by linearizing assumptions which are evaluated by some typical numerical data. The Memorandum concludes that these assumptions are satisfactory within practical tolerances as far as an optimal control system is concerned, but the linearizing assumptions appear to have an adverse effect on the performance of the filter used to process observational data.
