Peter Dortmans is a senior researcher at RAND Australia. He joined RAND in 2018 after 18 years within Australia’s Department of Defence. He divides his time between undertaking analysis for Australian clients such as Defence and Home Affairs and supporting business development opportunities that cover the full range of RAND activities. Recent work includes topics such as major maritime surface combatant acquisition, maritime robotics autonomous systems, critical technologies of national interest, national shipbuilding planning and execution, enterprise metrics development, national mobilisation strategies, and capability development and aquisition approaches. As an operations analysis and futures practitioner, he has led research and analysis that has supported the national security community as well as the strategy, joint and land domains within Defence. Dortmans has previously worked in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet on the National Security Science and Innovation Strategy. Dortmans has broad experience working across national security departments in science and technology policy development. Dortmans has a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Melbourne and a Masters in strategic studies from the Australian National University.
