Andrew Gibson is an analyst at RAND Europe in the Defence, Security and Justice research group, working within the Data Science Lab and Centre for Defence Economics and Acquisition. He has led and supported UK and US government projects on the coproduction of anti-air munitions, automated drone defence technologies, and methodologies for identifying societal risks from advanced AI systems.

From a data science and modelling perspective, Gibson is developing a range of economic tools for defence and macroeconomic challenges and uses large language models to query large databases using Python-based dashboards.

He holds a D.Phil. in materials science from the University of Oxford for research on reducing the cost of ceramic ballistic armour, and a first-class M.Sci. in physics from the University of Glasgow, where he contributed to validating hybrid-pixel detectors for CERN’s ATLAS experiment.
