Volume 2: Codebooks for Fee-for-Service Visits — Outpatient, Inpatient, and Dental

Christine E. Peterson, M. M. Nelsen, Deborah L. Wesley, Ellyn S. Bloomfield

ResearchPublished 1986

This codebook describes the contents of a data file from the Health Insurance Experiment (HIE), a large social experiment conducted by The RAND Corporation from 1974 to 1982 under a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The fee-for-service (FFS) visits files provide data concerning each covered visit or hospitalization of FFS participants only, with one exception: Dental visits of participants enrolled in a health maintenance organization are included in the FFS dental visits data. These files are useful for obtaining an overview of the services rendered to HIE participants during covered visits and hospitalizations, and the total expenditures for those visits.
