A study of electronically scanned radars. For such systems, it is desirable to use equally excited elements on transmission and equal weights on reception. Sidelobes are controlled by "space taper" (unequal spacing) rather than by amplitude taper. The memorandum considers the least-mean-square comparison of directivity patterns of line sources having different illumination distributions and, in particular, the approximation of a given directive pattern by means of equally excited but unequally spaced antenna elements
