Matt Sharkey is a biosecurity resident at RAND. He is a biosecurity researcher professional experience in virology and pharmaceutical research, laboratory risk management, and federal policy development and implementation—including with federal policies intended to establish security for synthetic nucleic acids and responsible oversight of high consequence pathogen research. His policy research is focused on ensuring that the risks associated with emerging biotechnologies are sufficiently mitigated to allow for their continued contributions to the health and prosperity of the American people. Sharkey holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology and a B.S. in molecular biology from Purdue University.
