Judith Huismans is co-director of the RAND Europe China Initiative. Working within the Defence, Security and Justice team, she primarily leads work on China, economic security and European resilience. Before joining RAND Europe, Huismans served as Head of China Research at Datenna, where she led a team of analysts producing open-source investigation into China’s corporate, academic, and technological landscape for government clients. Prior to that, she lived and worked in Hong Kong, gaining experience in corporate risk intelligence.
Her work integrates in-depth China analysis with a focus on economic and research security. Since joining RAND, she has led projects on investments in critical infrastructure and technologies, as well as on strengthening supply chain resilience. She has conducted extensive research on China’s science and technology landscape, exploring the development of emerging disruptive technologies and their security implications, including the impact on academic collaborations and research security. Additionally, she has contributed to broader resilience work, such as examining the transition to a ‘war economy’ and identifying challenges in supply chains and defence industrial production.
Huismans holds an M.Sc. in international economics and business from Utrecht University and an M.Sc. in international relations from the University of Amsterdam.
